Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) is the use of medication, along with counseling and education, to help an individual fight opioid addiction. The right medication can help reduce drug cravings and support recovery.
Medications have shown great success in helping individuals overcome their drug addictions. We use two different kinds of medications to help with addiction recovery. We use Buprenorphine, which is packaged under the brand name Suboxone, among others. This medicine works by helping you control drug cravings, maintain a clear head as you work through withdrawal, and it helps to block receptors which are activated by opioids so they won't have as much of an effect.
The other medication we use is Naltrexone, which is packaged under the brand name Vivotrol. Vivotrol is given as a shot and lasts for 28 days. Vivotrol works by blocking the receptors that respond to opioids. This works by helping prevent the feeling of a "need" to use an opioid. However, because receptors are blocked, opioid tolerance goes down after using Vivotrol which causes an increased risk of overdose should a person use opioids again.
*Please understand: Medication is only one part of treatment. Be ready to learn about addiction, work through challenges, and build your strength to stay well!
